The government has allocated USD4 million to be included in the proposed state budget for the 2024 parliamentary election.
The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has been allocated USD75 million in next year's budget, with USD4 million earmarked for the 2024 parliamentary election. A total of USD97,300 has also been allocated for holding by-elections of women's development committees (WDCs). A total of 93 seats have been allocated for the next parliamentary election, which is an increase of six seats in the current 87-seat Parliament.
Speaking about the new constituencies, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said that Eydhafushi in Baa Atoll, Villingili in Kaafu Atoll, and Meedhoo in Addu City will only represent the residents of the respective islands. He said the names of other existing consistencies have also been changed. In addition, he said that the 2024 parliamentary election will be held in late March or early April and will likely coincide with the holy month of Ramadan. He also said that ECM will announce the date of the election in November.
