The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has planned to schedule four local council by-elections in December.
ECM specified that the by-elections are intended to fill positions, including a female member for the Kelaa Island Council in Haa Alifu Atoll, a council member for Maafaru Island Council in Noonu Atoll and Hangnaameedhoo Island Council in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. A by-election will also be held to elect the president of the Guraidhoo Island Council in Thaa Atoll.
Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said that the by-elections for the four islands are scheduled for December 16, with voting to be held from 0800-1600hrs. He also said that the final results of the by-elections are expected to be announced on December 18.
Interested candidates have until November 18 to submit their applications to contest the elections. The necessary application forms are accessible on the ECM website.
