PPM/PNC coalition to hold primary in January

The opposition coalition of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC) has decided to hold its primary for the parliamentary election on January 20.

In a joint press statement, the PPM/PNC coalition stated that the opportunity to submit candidacies for the primary election will be open from December 20-31. The statement highlighted that both parties will be contesting the parliamentary election as a coalition.

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) plans to hold the parliamentary election in March or April next year, and will announce the official date later this month. Both the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the opposition PPM/PNC coalition have announced their intention to contest all seats in the election.

The preliminary report on the designation of constituencies for the 2024 parliamentary election shows that 93 seats have been allocated for the next parliamentary election, which is an increase of six seats in the current 87-seat parliament. The proposed state budget for 2024 has allocated USD4 million to hold the election.
