MDP accuses Speaker of obstructing no-confidence motion

The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed of obstructing the no-confidence motion against him.

In a press release, MDP stated that the Speaker can only retain his position with the trust and confidence of the parliamentarians and that only an individual who adheres to democratic principles and dares to face a no-confidence vote should hold the post. The party stated that the dignified choice for a Speaker who lacks the confidence of the members is to dismiss himself from the post.

Additionally, MDP stated that it will not allow the Parliament to conduct its work in violation of the Constitution during the transition process, expressing its wish to ensure that the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect is held without the possibility of questioning its legal validity. It also stated the Constitution and the parliamentary regulations were not formulated to allow any party to undermine the legislative power. It added that the Parliament consists of the people's elected representatives and that their work should continue without interruption in accordance with the Constitution and the parliamentary regulations.

MDP submitted the no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed with 49 signatures and the motion has been placed on the agenda for October 29. MDP, which has the majority in Parliament, submitted the no-confidence motion after accusing Speaker Nasheed of hindering its work.
