Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has submitted a new motion against the Chief Magistrate of Haa Dhaalu Judicial Constituency Ali Adam to the Parliament while the Judiciary Committee evaluates the initial motion to dismiss him.
The first motion for dismissal was proposed in September after the JSC concluded the investigation of a case involving Chief Magistrate Adam calling and texting a woman who filed for divorce at his court. JSC filed the new motion to dismiss him on October 25.
The investigation has shown that Chief Magistrate Adam called and texted the woman while presiding over the divorce proceedings in an attempt to form a relationship with her. JSC also received screenshots of messages sent by the judge, attempting to obtain personal information and requesting that she delete the messages. The judge has also confessed to the allegations. As such, the commission concluded that Chief Magistrate Adam had abused his authority based on the evidence. Magistrate Adam has been in suspension since May 25.
The commission expressed concern that the Parliament has not yet made a decision on its initial motion to dismiss him.
