The Democrats has accused the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of attempting to disrupt the President-elect's swearing-in ceremony. The accusation was made after the MDP Parliamentary Group (PG) stated that they will not cooperate on any matter in the Parliament until a vote is taken on the no-confidence motion against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
In a press release, The Democrats accused MDP of attempting to disrupt the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect and Vice President-elect. The Democrats called on the main ruling party to adhere to the Constitution, democratic principles, and the will of the people.
The Democrats was formed by parliamentarians who left MDP after Speaker Nasheed lost the presidential primary. Nasheed later left MDP to join The Democrats.
At a recent press conference, MDP PG Leader Mohamed Aslam said that the members at a meeting unanimously voted to issue a three-line whip to vote to remove Speaker Nasheed. He also said that they would not cooperate on any matter in the Parliament until the vote is taken. The current matters of the parliament include holding the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect.
MDP submitted the no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed with 49 signatures on October 9. The motion has been placed on the agenda for October 29 and the MDP PG agreed to have all members present for the vote. MDP, which has the majority in Parliament, submitted the no-confidence motion after accusing Speaker Nasheed of hindering its work.
