MPS issues over 31,000 parking fines

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has issued over 31,000 parking fines as of September this year.

Speaking to PSM News, Sub-Inspector of Police Hussain Aslah said the most common traffic violations are illegal parking offences. He said other frequent violations include driving without a license, driving while talking on the phone, speeding, and using number plates that violate government standards.

Furthermore, Sub-Inspector Aslah said MPS had towed 1,071 vehicles while 31,770 fines have been issued for illegal parking as of September this year. He noted the public outrage over officers issuing parking fines but said that they do so for public safety. He detailed the various offences such as vehicles being parked on the corner of the streets and blocking the entry to the pavement. He explained that not taking action on such offences would undermine the safety of the community.

The police service has urged citizens to take responsibility and work together to solve issues related to road safety. MPS also called on individuals to respect each other and think about the well-being of others on the street.
