Security heightened due to gang activity on voting day

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has increased security in Male' due to an increase in gang activity on voting day.

MPS stated that police officers are responding to a spike in reports of gang-related offences in Male', including intimidation and assaults on individuals related to various aspects of the presidential election. The police service stated that the reports are being investigated as serious cases. The reports include assaults on two parliamentarians representing main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

MPS is maintaining security during the second round of the presidential election as part of Operation Blue Wave. Over 1,200 officers are active polling stations and special teams have been assigned to attend to situations in specific regions. The police service assured that officers are at the highest level of alertness and are prepared to respond any situation during and after the election.
