The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that the opposition is conducting a campaign of disinformation aimed at spreading fear among the public in an attempt to sway the outcome of the presidential election.
In a press release, MDP accused the opposition of spreading disinformation with the aim of instigating fear in the lead-up to the second round of the election. The main ruling party expressed concern over the actions on behalf of members of MDP, coalition partner Adhaalath Party (AP), and campaigners. It noted that the opposition implemented similar tactics before the first round of the election.
As such, MDP condemned these campaigns, viewing them as a deceitful ploy to garner more votes at a critical juncture, which ultimately erodes the strength of the democratic system. The party urged citizens to remain vigilant against disinformation and to cast their votes free from external influence.
