Gov't advocates use of technology in climate change solutions

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has highlighted the importance of implementing technology to solve climate change. She made the remark at the inauguration ceremony of the Maldives Ocean Hackathon.

Speaking at the event, Minister Shauna highlighted the importance of fully understanding the damage being caused by climate change. She also expressed delight in seeing the hackathon continuing to be held since commencing two years ago.

Additionally, Minister Shauna said she has held discussions with the relevant authorities on solving major environmental issues and that they have realised that using technological innovation is pivotal. As such, she said that technology such as satellites can be used to collect data on erosion and changes in the ocean. She added that air pollution, coral bleaching, and plastic pollution's impact on fishing should be studied in order to take measures to mitigate the damage based on the data.

The Maldives Ocean Hackathon aims to bring local and global innovators in technology and the environment together to find solutions to the issues posed by climate change. The hackathon is a 48 hour event that is divided into three days to ensure that as many people as possible are involved.

The hackathon is scheduled to take place from October 15-17 with 10 teams of three to five members. The winner will receive USD10,000.
