Independent presidential candidate Hassan Zameel has pledged to eliminate income tax while ushering in a new era with the introduction of a wealth tax.
Zameel, a former Deputy Minister of Defence, has adopted a unique strategy, exclusively campaigning on social media. Recently, he unveiled his comprehensive manifesto online, outlining a range of transformative proposals. Among them is the proposal for the implementation of a progressive wealth tax framework, coupled with mandatory property zakat contributions.
Zameel's manifesto advocates a thorough reassessment and reform of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and import duties, under his economic vision. Notably, it envisions the establishment of toll charges on bridges within the Greater Male' area. Further strategic points include the revival of handicrafts and strategic initiatives to ensure that visitors and global markets have access to authentic local products.
Additionally, Zameel's policies encompass the creation of an accessible framework for the procurement of fisheries and agricultural commodities in the Maldives. His manifesto envisions the establishment of processing facilities that would facilitate the conversion and storage of these resources for sustained exports.
Moreover, his vision extends to enhancing transportation infrastructure. It includes plans for the completion of both road and sea-based public transit systems. Simultaneously, his platform seeks to alleviate road congestion on the islands linked to Male', thereby streamlining transportation.
