Gov't seeking contractors to build safe shelter in Addu

The Ministry of Finance has announced seeking contractors for the construction of a domestic violence/gender-based violence shelter for victims of domestic abuse in Addu City.

Under the Strengthening Gender Inclusive Initiative project by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), grant assistance of USD 7.5 million has been provided for the establishment of three safe shelters in Hulhumale', Addu, and Raa Atoll in the Maldives. The assistance was given under an agreement between the Maldives and ADB in December 2022. These shelters aim to support victims of domestic and gender-based violence in the region.

The finance ministry is seeking eligible bidders for the construction of the safe shelter in Addu. The construction is being carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. The bid opening for the project will be held on September 19.

The project is being implemented over five years with the aim of achieving five main outcomes. The aim of the project is to provide support and protection needed by victims of domestic violence through a dedicated system. The project will help reduce the level of violence against women in the Maldives and increase women's participation in social and economic affairs.
