President and First Lady attend Independence Day celebrations

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have attended the military display, procession, and festivities commemorating the 58th Independence Day at the National Stadium.

Upon their arrival at the venue, President Solih and First Lady Fazna were greeted with presidential salutations. This was followed by a performance of the National Anthem by a combined ensemble orchestra of members from various School Bands and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) military band. The President and First Lady then observed a procession by the Armed Forces Guard and a collective squad from the Maldives’ schools, which marched past the Presidential Stand and honoured the President with another salute.

The Independence Day celebrations featured a parade of honour by the Maldives National Cadet Corps (MNCC), with the participation of 14 schools from Male'. The festivities also included cultural and musical performances by the MNDF, junior and senior groups from Male' City, Hulhumale', Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, Vashafaru in Haa Alifu Atoll, and Dhiggaru in Meemu Atoll.

One of the items depicted the scene of the loss of Maldives' independence and the subsequent defeat of the invaders and the celebration of victory. Other items showcased traditional sports and cultural activities, the historic development of the Maldives, and the country's various cultural traditions. The items presented by various schools included songs and other presentations that depicted the journey of the Maldives towards independence.

The last item was a special presentation by the MNDF dedicated to Sultan Mohammed Imaduddin I, who is a national hero who fought off foreign invaders during the 17th century. The MNDF also displayed their uniforms and military equipment during the presentation.

The Independence Day celebrations were observed by President Solih, Vice President Faisal Naseem, cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, foreign dignitaries, and a large number of the public.
