MCS extends Adeeb's medical leave

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has extended the medical leave for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) granted permission for Adeeb to travel overseas on July 12 for medical purposes as he needed to undergo tests unavailable in the Maldives. Adeeb initially left for Singapore for ten days under the custody of MCS and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) but requested an extension to his leave.

MCS granted the request and extended Adeeb's leave to August 28 based on his medical documents. The correctional service clarified that it has the authority to grant extensions to the medical leave of prisoners if they are unable to receive the proper treatment during the given time frame.

Former Vice President Adeeb's party, the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), stated that he left for Singapore for treatment of a life-threatening neurological disease based on the recommendations of multiple doctors at different hospitals. Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October 2020, in connection to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement and money laundering scandal. However, he was transferred to house arrest due to his ill health.
