AGO submits bills to change JSC composition

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has submitted bills to change the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and reduce the number of members.

Changing the composition of the JSC is a presidential pledge of the administration. The AGO stated that two amendment bills have been submitted to remove the Speaker of Parliament, the President of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), and the Representative of the President and to reduce the number of members to seven. The decision was made after the AGO held meetings with the members of the judiciary, legal professionals, civil society organisations, and the public on reforming the JSC and preventing the judiciary from being influenced by other state powers.

Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath has said that judicial reform is one of the most important pledges made by the administration. He noted that nine bills have been submitted to Parliament since 2019 regarding JSC and that the two new bills aim to completely reform the commission.

JSC is composed of 10 members consisting of the Speaker of Parliament, representative judges from the Supreme Court, the High Court, and the lower courts, representatives from the President and the Parliament, as well as the President of CSC and the Attorney General, a lawyer, and a member of the public.
