Ex-Vice President Adeeb agrees to pay remaining fine within three years

Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has reached an agreement with the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to settle the remaining fine of USD65,000 over a period of three years. The agreement was reached after the AGO filed a case at the Civil Court of the Maldives.

As part of the agreement, Adeeb is required to make an immediate payment of USD13,000 and settle the remaining amount of USD52,000 within the stipulated three-year period.

In 2020, the Criminal Court sentenced Adeeb to 20 years and issued a fine of USD130,000 after he pleaded guilty to the charges pressed against him in relation to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal. The state pressed seven charges against Adeeb, including two charges for participating in the embezzlement of state funds, two charges for money laundering, two charges for influence peddling, and one charge for illicit use of an official position. Adeeb pleaded guilty to all charges in accordance with the confession agreement made between him and the state.
