No-confidence motion submitted against Deputy Speaker

A no-confidence motion has been submitted to remove Eva Abdulla from her position as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of the Maldives.

All three members presiding over Parliament sittings formed their own faction within Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after disagreements within the main ruling party. It has also led to Deputy Speaker Eva and Parliamentarian Ibrahim Afeef leaving the party.

The Parliamentary Group (PG) of MDP unanimously passed the motion to remove Eva Abdulla as Deputy Speaker prior to submitting the no-confidence motion with signatures from 50 lawmakers.

The removal of the speaker or deputy speaker requires a no-confidence motion signed by at least one-fourth of the parliamentarians present at the sitting.
