Prison abuse is in the past: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated that prison abuse is a thing of the past and that officers caught abusing prisoners will be dismissed. He made the remark while responding to questions at the Parliament of the Maldives.

At the sitting, Minister Imran said that ending prison torture and abuse was one of the top priorities of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih when he assumed office. The minister said that he personally looks into any prison abuse cases and assured that offending officers will be dismissed.

Additionally, Minister Imran highlighted the efforts being made to improve the condition of prisons with an emphasis on rehabilitation. He noted that the first batch of prisoners who have completed the drug rehabilitation programme has been released and that the programme will assist in reducing recidivism. He also said that the government has introduced Mandela Rules as part of efforts to improve prisons, and is also focused on confiscating and punishing those who bring in contraband.
