Gov't launches project to build IWMCs in 15 islands

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has launched a project to establish island waste management centres (IWMCs) in 15 islands in the Greater Male' Region.

The first three islands in the project have been contracted to Central Line Private Limited. The islands include Thulusdhoo, Huraa, and Himmafushi in Kaafu Atoll. The project is worth more than USD713,359.

The agreement was signed by Permanent Secretary Ajwad Musthafa and Managing Director of Central Line Abdulla Asim. The project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the government under the Greater Male' Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project.

The centres will be built to withstand climate change effects and adhere to high environmental standards. The centres will play a vital role in waste collection, treatment, and recycling, and promote waste segregation within communities. Each centre will have office buildings and a guard post. In addition, public awareness programmes will also be conducted as part of the project. The next 12 islands in the project are also scheduled to be handed over this year.
