Ministry of Tourism has revealed that over 700,000 tourists have visited the Maldives so far in 2023.
The statistics from the tourism ministry show that 710,645 tourists visited the Maldives so far this year, which is a 6.4% increase compared to the 667,700 tourists during the same period in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also a 17.5% increase compared to 640,730 tourists during the same period in 2022. The statistics also showed that the number of tourists visiting the Maldives in the first five days of May this year decreased by 19.9% compared to the same period in 2022 and increased by 3.3% compared to the same period in 2019.
Additionally, tourist arrivals from China have been increasing in the past weeks. China was the top source market until the country closed its borders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chinese tourists began visiting the Maldives again this year after the country re-opened its borders. A total of 4.7 million tourists have arrived from China so far this year and the country is currently the sixth top source market.
The tourism ministry aims to record 1.9 million tourist visits this year.
