Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef has discussed measures to further improve the quality of utility services, in line with its policies, and identified steps to be taken to implement the necessary changes.
The meeting was attended by managing directors of State Electric Company (STELCO), Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and FENAKA Corporation, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and other relevant institutions.
The discussions centred around planning the steps to take to improving the services that companies already provide to citizens, under the Government’s frameworks. . Discussions covered a wide range of issues related to addressing challenges in the provision of water, sewerage and electricity services.
Minister Ali Shareef highlighted the Government's priority of providing essential services to the public in a convenient and reliable manner, and stressed the importance of relevant institutions working together.
The Government has decided to dissolve FENAKA Corporation and transfer all of its services under STELCO. The move was aimed at enhancing state services under an accountable institution. Fenaka currently provides 127 islands with its services.
Work is under way to provide islands better electricity capacity under providing utility services and repopulating the islands. The Government also aims to replace the 33 percent of the energy used during the peak hours of the Maldives with renewable energy. Fenaka and STELCO has already provided many islands with solar-power services.
