Women should have more opportunity to advance in ICT: Gov't

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has said that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is fundamental for development and women should have the opportunity to advance in the sector. She made the remarks in a special video message on the occasion of the International Girls in ICT Day 2023 held to recognise the work of outstanding women in the sector and to expand the efforts to interest more women in the sector.

In her message, Minister Shauna noted that it is an age that relies on digital technology. She also stressed the importance of expanding the role of women in such a developing field.

Meanwhile, Women in Tech Maldives and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) have also organised a virtual tour called Next Gen Virtual Innovation Tour since 2019 to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day in the Maldives. The tour has been held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

The event aims to showcase the field as a career option for girls of the future. The event will create a safe environment for technology experts and children to connect and exchange information. The event also aims to share job opportunities and higher education opportunities in the field and encourage people to choose the ICT field. A total of 12 parties, including government and private companies took part in the tour.
