Qasim submits candidacy for JP presidential primary

Jumhooree Party (JP) has revealed that its Leader Qasim Ibrahim is the only member to have submitted his candidacy for the presidential primary election. JP closed the opportunity for its members to contest in the primary election on March 30.

The JP council has decided to field a candidate as the leader of its own coalition for the upcoming presidential election. The party regulations dictated that the leader should be automatically chosen as the presidential candidate. However, JP amended the regulations to allow party members to vie for the presidential ticket in a primary election. JP contested the presidential elections in 2008 and 2013 without holding a primary election.

The presidential election will be held on September 9. Individuals who have officially announced their bid to run in the election are President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Abdulla Yameen, President of Maldives National Party (MNP) Mohamed Nazim, and former Attorney General (AG) Dr. Mohamed Munavvaru.
