WAMCO to introduce premium waste collection service

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has said that waste will be collected from the ground floor of buildings, adding a separate premium rate will be introduced to collect waste from door-to-door.

Speaking at a press conference on the inclusion of the waste disposal bill in the utility bill of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), Managing Director Yoosuf Siraj said the change will solve the current difficulties in raising profits from waste collection from households. He said that the waste disposal bill will be included in the utility bill of more than 50,000 households registered with STELCO. He said that 24,000 households are currently registered with WAMCO. He also said customers will be given the opportunity to lodge complaints regarding the decision.

WAMCO is currently charging USD9.7 per household to collect waste. The prices charged to collect fees from government companies and private collectors have been changed to manage cash flow. As such, USD166 per tonne is charged from state agencies and government-owned companies. In addition, private commercial collectors are charged USD172.5 per tonne, private individuals are charged USD68.7 per tonne for waste brought to the transfer station, and USD64.8 per tonne that is not separated.
