Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to appoint Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Ahmed Shakeel to the High Court.
JSC stated that the advisory committee on the appointment of judges interviewed the applicants for the vacant position at the High Court bench and recommended Chief Judge Shakeel. JSC approved the recommendation to appoint Chief Judge Shakeel to the position at the meeting held on March 5.
Chief Judge Shakeel achieved a Bachelor of Shariah and Master of Shariah from Villa College. He has served 19 years as a judge at the Ukulhas Magistrate Court, Juvenile Court, Family Court, and Criminal Court. He also carried out the trial against former President Abdulla Yameen over the sale of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll, for resort development.
The salary of a high court judge is USD3,520. In addition, medical allowance and mobile allowance will be paid as stipulated by the Parliament of Maldives.
