The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has opened for interested members to submit candidacies for the by-election for Guraidhoo Constituency.
The seat became vacant after Parliamentarian Ibrahim Riza passed away. The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) decided to hold the by-election for Guraidhoo Constituency on April 15.
MDP decided to hold a primary election to select its candidate for the Guraidhoo Constituency by-election on March 11. The opportunity to nominate candidates for the primary is open until 1600hrs on March 2. Any interested member should submit the candidacy along with the support of 100 party members.
Riza was undergoing treatment for cancer in Malaysia when he passed away on February 23. He represented the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and was one of the longest-serving parliamentarians. As such, he has served the last three terms as the Parliamentarian for the Guraidhoo Constituency. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary and the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions. He had also previously served as the Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
