The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has scheduled to hold the by-election for Guraidhoo Constituency on April 15.
Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said the by-election will be held on April 15 and candidacy forms will be accepted soon. The seat became vacant after Parliamentarian Ibrahim Riza passed away. He was undergoing treatment for cancer in Malaysia when he passed away on February 23.
Riza, who represented the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), was one of the longest-serving parliamentarians. As such, he has served the last three terms as the Parliamentarian for the Guraidhoo Constituency. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary and the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions. He had also previously served as the Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
