Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has submitted a new fee structure to the Utility Regulatory Authority.
Managing Director Yoosuf Siraj said the company has started consolidating the bills of households and commercial services with the bills from State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) to ensure equal prices for services rendered. The company has also submitted a new fee structure to the Utility Regulatory Authority.
WAMCO also developed other convenient payment options. Those who find it difficult to pay their bills in bulk can pay them in installments. WAMCO is responsible for the disposal of garbage from households and commercial establishments. Registered households have to pay USD9.72 per month for garbage disposal. In addition to collecting waste, cleaning the roads and managing the garbage, the waste is transported to managing centres under a separate rule.
WAMCO stated that there are over 40,000 households registered for water and electricity utility services in Male' City. However, the number of households registered for the waste service is 14,000. These include 800 households registered in Vilimale' and 4000 households in Hulhumale'. A large number of individuals are not registered while others are registered but do not pay their waste disposal bills bills regularly. As such, WAMCO has not received more than USD2.7 million in 2022.
WAMCO stated that it is a major challenge for the company to run smoothly as it does not generate revenue for its services. Therefore, the issue of non-registration and non-payment of fees for the service was resolved during the past year. The discussions with the relevant authorities have now led to the consolidation of the waste disposal bill into the utility bill.
