Gov't proposes amendments to Maldives Police Service Act

The government has proposed amendments to the Maldives Police Service Act in order to extend the period given to police officers who are allowed to investigate with at least diploma level education. The amendment was proposed by Parliamentarian Ahmed Easa on behalf of the government.

The proposed amendment states the law requires police officers to have received education and special training. Police officers who are allowed in various police investigations must have a diploma level degree in the field. A minimum of two years is given for obtaining a diploma level qualification.

The amendment also proposes to empower the Commissioner of Police to extend the deadline to April 2024. The amendment was proposed because this level of qualification may not be obtained within the currently stipulated time frame. The most robust step taken after the transformation of the police service as a civil service was the change in the legal structure of the police. Therefore, the proposed amendments include many provisions on police education, accountability and accountability.
