Case filed at court over MDP primary election result

A member of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has filed a case at the Civil Court to stop President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from receiving the main ruling party’s presidential ticket.

The case was filed by senior party member Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, who is a supporter of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. His legal representative in the case is Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, who was the Attorney General during the administration of Nasheed.

MDP will be officially awarding the presidential ticket to President Solih at a ceremony on February 17. Speaker Nasheed, who President Solih defeated in the primary election, has questioned the results and submitted multiple complaints to the party’s election committee. The committee has since stated that no result-changing complaint was submitted.

In the primary election held on January 28, President Solih secured the MDP presidential ticket in a landslide victory after defeating Speaker Nasheed. President Solih won the primary election with 61%, which is 24,572 votes, while Speaker Nasheed received 39%, which is 15,631 votes.
