Gov’t begins issuing digital driving licenses

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has begun issuing digital driving licenses.

The digital driving license was introduced as part of the ministry’s efforts to provide efficient and convenient services. As such, drivers can now use their smartphones to display their license via the Maldives Police Service (MPS) mobile application.

The ministry is rolling out the digital road vehicle driving license service and implementing data migration to include digital licenses in the services included in the software developed by the ministry. Following the change, drivers will no longer have to wait in queues to fill out paper forms and license applications.

The change will also reduce the cost of printing road licenses. Instead of issuing a plastic card, an environmentally friendly solution will be available by issuing licenses digitally. The ministry stated that individuals who wish to keep their license cards will be able to print them.

Providing convenient and fast services is an important policy of the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The initiative includes introducing digital identification cards, establishing a digital identity platform, a digital identity mobile application, a biometric identification system, and the introduction of a contactless smart identification card.
