Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) is seeking a contractor to upgrade the Maafaru International Airport terminal. IASL requested interested Maldivian companies to submit bids by February 12.

Speaking to PSM News, General Manager Mumthaz Ali said the purpose of upgrading the terminal is to increase the capacity of the airport as well as add more counters of Maldives Immigration and establish commercial and VVIP lounges. He said that the terminal will be developed into a two-storey building and that the first floor will include the VVIP lounge and the second floor will include the commercial lounge and offices.

Furthermore, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is preparing to upgrade the Maafaru International Airport and expand the runway. The project is funded with a USD27 million grant from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The development of the runway and terminal is expected to significantly increase the capacity of the airport.

The upgrade and expansion are part of the second phase of the development of Maafaru International Airport. MTCC is tasked with expanding the runway by 650m, expanding the strip, as well as reclaiming land, and building coastal protection structures. Other tasks include upgrading the runway pavement, expanding the taxiway, and upgrading the aeronautical ground lighting (AGL) and power system.
