JP to decide on presidential election in February

Jumhooree Party (JP) has revealed the council elected by the party congress will decide whether to contest in the upcoming presidential election.

JP, currently a member of the ruling government coalition, will hold its congress in the last week of February. The National Assembly with the representation of all members must be held before the end of March in the year in which the presidential election is scheduled to be held, according to the JP Constitution, However, the JP Constitution does not prevent the National Assembly from being expedited or postponed if the party council makes such a decision. JP will elect its council at the National Assembly held in February. JP said it would also decide whether to contest the presidential election at the first meeting of the newly elected council.

JP has the third largest membership with 17,913, as per the political party registry maintained by the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM). JP is also the second-largest party in the ruling government coalition.
