Accountability cannot be achieved through a culture of secrecy: PG

Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has said that a culture of accountability cannot be created through a culture of secrecy. He made the remark while speaking at the ceremony held to launch the official website and the newsletter of the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO).

The newsletter named Unsuru was launched by Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed at a ceremony held at the PGO. The website called Aamahi was launched by Information Commissioner Ahmed Ahid Rasheed.

Speaking at the ceremony, PG Shameem said the main objective of PGO is to disclose information and provide information. He said the website is a step to ensure that no one has to come to the office for information, adding those in senior positions can be held accountable only if the information is properly disclosed. He noted the biggest challenge is the lack of public awareness of the laws and regulations on how to prosecute, adding that it is the main reason for division among the public and questioning the PGO and the justice system.

PGO has launched the website in an effort to provide the latest statistics on the work of the office and to publicise the information rather than keeping information private. The website, which will be updated every six hours, provides information on cases and other information.
