Japan provides USD5.1 million to enhance waste management capacity

Minister of Foreign Affairs has signed the Exchange of Notes with the government of Japan for a grant aid of USD5.1 million to enhance sustainable waste management capabilities in the Maldives under the Economic and Social Development Programme. The agreement was signed during the official visit of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Takei Shunsuke to the Maldives.

At a ceremony held at the foreign ministry, the agreement was signed by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and State Minister Takei Shunske. After signing the agreement, State Minister Khaleel said discussions were held with Japan on further important areas of cooperation. He said that safe waste management is linked to the government's vision, adding there are still many challenges in achieving environmental targets.

The year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of political relations between Japan and the Maldives. Japan has been providing assistance to the Maldives in the fields of education, health, environment, and social sectors over the decades. Japan also provided major assistance to the Maldives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
