Huraa Island Council has contracted Fix In Marine Private Limited to develop and operate a modern boat yard in Huraa, Kaafu Atoll.
Fix In Marine was officially handed over the 100,000sqft of land designated for the construction of a boat yard on the west side of the island.
Speaking at the ceremony held to hand over the land to Fix In Marine, Huraa Island Council Easa Ahmed has said the development of the boat yard will greatly benefit the people of the island in many ways. He noted traditional methods of building boats were dangerous and very time-consuming.
Under the agreement, Fix In Marine will spend a total of USD13.24 million on the development of Huraa within 30 years as a public social responsibility.
Speaking at the ceremony, Parliamentarian Ibrahim Naseem said the boat yard will generate job opportunities and boost the economy of the island. Under the agreement, Fix In Council will build boats and launches as well as repair the vessels in the boat yard.
The boat yard is expected to be completed and operational within one and a half years and is expected to bring significant relief to boat owners in many nearby islands in the region.
