The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has recorded a revenue of USD43 million received in Departure Tax.
Statistics published by MIRA show that USD43 million was received in Departure Tax so far in 2022, which is a two-fold increase compared to the same period in 2021. As of September, MIRA collected more than USD900 million in revenue and the Departure Tax accounted for 3.6% of the revenue in 2022.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the First Amendment to the Airport Taxes and Fees Act in July 2021, which introduced the Departure Tax. It was implemented on January 1, 2022, and the previously enacted airport service charge of USD12 for Maldivians and USD25 for foreign passengers is no longer in effect. The tax is levied on passengers based on the airline fare classes and would be waived for passengers with diplomatic immunity and children under the age of two years.
The Departure Tax are USD12 for Maldivians travelling in Economy Class, USD30 for foreigners travelling in Economy Class, USD60 for all passengers travelling in Business Class, USD90 for all passengers travelling in First Class, and USD 120 for all passengers travelling on private jets.
