Violence against women still not adequately addressed: HRCM

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has stated that violence against women is not being adequately investigated.

HRCM expressed concern that various forms of violence against women have not decreased in society despite the rights guaranteed by the laws of the Maldives. A total of 504 cases of various types of domestic violence against women were reported in the first nine months of the year, according to the quarterly reports published by the Family Protection Authority.

Speaking to PSM News, Senior Education Officer at HRCM Khadheeja Limya said that the various types of violence against women in the Maldives include mental, physical, and sexual violence. She said that cases of intimidation, verbal attacks, and financial or economic sanctions have been reported. In addition, she noted that cases of alimony not being paid are also increasing in the country. She said the constitution provides equal opportunities for women and men. She said there are still challenges women are facing due to the attitude of some people although there are no direct discriminations against women.

Speaking to PSM News, Education Officer at HRCM Ahmed Ameez said that important laws have been enacted within the legal system to prevent violence against women and eliminate discrimination. He noted that the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, the Prevention of Violations of Universal Social Standards Act, the Criminal Procedure Act, as well as the Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Harassment Act, the Sexual Offenses Act and the Family Act guarantee key rights for women. He, however, said acts of violence against women are still not adequately investigated. He also noted that the public needs to be made aware of such laws and rights.
