HDC says Hulhumale’ parking spaces allocated fairly

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has denied media reports claiming that parking slots in Hulhumale’ are being allocated in violation of policy.

HDC introduced “parking pockets” across Hulhumale’ in 2024, as a long-term solution to ongoing parking issues, and were opened them the public the same year.

Some media outlets have alleged the slots were being sold such that some parties receive undue gain. However, HDC said spaces are allocated fairly to eligible applicants, and urged not to spread untrue information regarding services provided to the citizens.

HDC said it follows a structured priority system when allocating parking slots, in the following order:

1. Hulhumale’ residents living within the same zone as the parking area
2. Other Hulhumale’ residents from different zones
3. Residents from outside Hulhumale’ within the greater Male’ area.

Spaces are assigned through a draw among eligible applicants.

According to HDC, a total of 1,374 parking spaces will be leased from eight parking zones for a period of one year The rent for each space is set at USD 130 per month.
