Opportunity reopened to submit proposals for national identification card redesign

Department of National Registration (DNR) has re-opened the opportunity to submit proposals to redesign the national identification card of the Maldives.

DNR initially made the announcement on June 27 but did not receive enough proposals. Therefore, the department has re-opened the opportunity and interested parties are required to submit their proposals by December 1.

DNR is seeking parties to redesign the national identification card as a smart card with modern security features. A designer will be selected for the project based on their technical capabilities and the initial concept proposed. The best conceptual design will receive a prize of USD13,000.

The concepts are required to be 54 millimetres in height and 85 millimetres in width and the design should not violate the country’s cultural and religious sensibilities. It also should not depict living or deceased persons. A committee formed by DNR will be judging the concepts based on their uniqueness and representation of the Maldives and its culture.

The government has stated that the introduction of digital identification cards will enable the improvement of digital services provided by state institutions and authorities. The initiative includes establishing a digital identity platform, a digital identity mobile application, a biometric identification system, and the introduction of a contactless smart identification card.
