Lack of witness testimonies result in open cases: PG

Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has stated that challenges in gaining witness testimonies have resulted in many cases remaining open.

In a blog post, PG Shameem detailed the statistics of cases submitted to courts. As such, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) submitted 167 cases to the court to prosecute 225 individuals in October. Most cases are related to drugs, terrorism, torture, and obstruction of a police officer.

The statistics show that the successfully prosecuted cases in October took 533 days to conclude and the unsuccessful cases took 870 days. Shameem said that these cases were submitted to court between 2009-2021 and that they were all unsuccessful because of the lack of witness testimonies. Most of the cases were drug-related and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the relevant authorities are working to conclude the cases.
