MDP to announce date for primaries after completing administrative tasks

The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated it will announce the date for the primary election after completing the necessary administrative tasks.

Spokesperson of MDP Anas Abdul Sattar said administrative tasks need to be completed before announcing the date for the primary election. Deputy Chairperson of MDP Ibrahim Waheed said the date for the primary election will be announced soon, noting that two months were given to apply for candidacy in the last primary election in 2013.

Some members have already expressed interest in running in the 2023 presidential election with the party’s ticket, including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. At the MDP congress, President Solih called on all members to focus their efforts on the upcoming presidential election in order to guarantee the party’s victory.

The main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has awarded its ticket to former President Abdulla Yameen. Others who have announced their intention to run in the presidential election include the Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Abdulla Jabir, President of Maldives National Party (MNP) Mohamed Nazim, and President of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Ahmed Siyam.
