Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated that the highest purpose of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is to guarantee the safety and security of Maldivians.
Speaking at the Victory Day ceremony held in Kulhudhuffushi City, Minister Mariya said every Maldivian remembers the name of martyr Corporal Hussain Adam for the courage he had shown in defending the nation. She also noted that the people of the northernmost atolls have historically worked to empower citizens and hold the government accountable.
Furthermore, Minister Mariya highlighted the efforts by the government to develop its security services since 1988 and that Maldivian soldiers are now better trained and equipped with modern weapons and equipment. She noted that the coup attempt on November 3, 1988, was the most dangerous attack on the Maldives in recent history and that there are still many challenges in ensuring national security. As such, she said that every soldier should remain steadfast in defending the safety and security of Maldivians.
Numerous events including a parade and fireworks were held in Kulhudhuffushi to celebrate Victory Day.
