Vice President arrives in Egypt for COP27

Vice President Faisal Naseem has arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference. A high-level delegation of government officials accompanies the vice president.

The climate change conference encompasses the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP17), and the 4th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Paris Agreement (CMA4).

The formal opening plenary of the conference will be held on November 6, at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Centre. COP27 is a significant event for the Maldives and an opportunity to address the nation's sustainable development plans on the global stage. Vice President Naseem will deliver the national statement of the Maldives at the conference on November 7.

In line with calls for the rights of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and global climate resilience, the Maldives unveiled an ambitious plan in 2019 to reach net zero emissions by 2030. The Maldives has led numerous initiatives to address and draw attention to the climate emergency, from participation in multilateral institutions to activities at the national level, with a particular focus on promoting the financial burden of resilience building and climate adaptation for less developed countries.
