Vice President Faisal Naseem has departed to attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
During the visit, Vice President Naseem will deliver the national statement at the conference and is scheduled to participate in several high-level round-table discussions. He is accompanied on the trip by a high-level delegation of government officials.
COP27 is a significant occasion for the Maldives and a chance to address the country's aims for sustainable development on a global level. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been a vocal advocate regarding the fiscal strain and climate vulnerabilities faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) during preceding global forums. The Maldives had previously announced an ambitious plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
The Government of Egypt is hosting COP27 bringing together parties to accelerate global climate action through emissions reduction, scaled-up adaptation efforts, and enhanced flows of appropriate finance. Many world leaders will participate in the summit, along with thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses, and advocates.
