MNP to hold presidential primaries in January

Maldives National Party (MNP) has decided to choose its presidential candidate in a primary election scheduled for January 14.

MNP decided to begin accepting candidates for the primary election on December 1. So far, the President of MNP Mohamed Nazim is the only member who has expressed interest in receiving the party ticket.

Former President Abdulla Yameen will be running in the 2023 presidential election as the candidate of the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), while the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be holding its primary election in December. Numerous parties have expressed interest in fielding candidates for the presidential election, including Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).

A USD5.8 million budget has been allocated for the presidential election, which is scheduled for September 2023.
