Total population of the Maldives recorded at 452,000

Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) has announced the population of Maldivians increased by 16,897 in the past eight years.

Citing the census data collected so far, the MBS said the population of the Maldives is recorded at 452,498. The data shows there are 355,331 local residents living in the Maldives which is 16,897 people more than the 338,434 Maldivians recorded in 2014. In addition, the number of foreigners in the Maldives has increased by 33,527 from 63,637 in 2014. As such, the number of foreigners currently living in the Maldives has risen to 97,164 which brings the total population of the country to 452,495. The bureau said the number of foreigners counted is 65% more than the Immigration data.

The population census is a count of all individuals and household units across the country. As such, data will be collected on the income and living conditions of the public during the census.
