The first-ever lawyers' conference named Raise the Bar held by the Bar Council of Maldives has concluded successfully.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan said knowledge derived from history is one of the most important foundations for building a better future and the efforts of lawyers to build a legal service and legal education in the country should be celebrated as a proud national effort.
Speaking at the ceremony, President of the Bar Council Ismail Wisham said such conferences are important for lawyers and essential to strengthening the sector. He also emphasised that practicing law is a responsibility and a license to exercise this responsibility would be valuable. He added renewal of a license would be the same as in other jurisdictions in the future by completing the required professional development and by paying the subscription.
The main objective of the conference is to highlight the goals achieved by the bar council under the Legal Profession Act of 2019 and to seek the views of the lawyers responsible for the bar council regarding the new services introduced under the Legal Profession Act of Maldives.
The bar council is the professional body in the Maldives that regulates the profession of barristers including issuing permits, protecting the rights of lawyers, and ensuring lawyers are professional and the jurisdiction is run truthfully and justly.
