Neykurendhoo Prison to positively change criminal environment

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the industrial prison to be built in Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll will bring about major positive changes in the criminal environment of the Maldives. He made the remarks at the ceremony held to contract Unique Choice Private Limited for the development of the first phase of the prison.

At the signing ceremony, Minister Imran said the construction of a prison in Neykurendhoo is one of the most important steps to be taken to bring youth back to society. Noting that drug addicts are facing major challenges in their lives, the minister said the prison will teach them industrial jobs as they complete their sentences. He revealed the development of the prison will commence next year while the concept and design have now been completed. He expressed hope the completion of the prison will bring drug addicts back to society and bring about a major change in the criminal environment of the country.

The construction of a prison in Neykurendhoo is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well as an important part of the strategic action plan in the area of correction and rehabilitation. The prison will provide rehabilitation care and treatment in an effort to bring criminals back to society.
