No fines so far imposed over incorrect registration plates

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said so far no fines have been imposed over incorrect registration plates on vehicles.

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation stated some vehicles are not numbered in accordance with Articles 8 and 9 of the vehicle registration guidelines of the Land Transport Act. Therefore, the ministry urged drivers to adhere to the relevant guidelines when making registration plates for their vehicles and granted a 10-day period to amend the plates.

The guidelines state vehicles with automotive engines are required to have registration plates provided by the vehicle registrar. As such, the letters and numbers on the plates are required to be in Arial Bold font with a specified size. The screws used to place the plates on the vehicles are not allowed to protrude one centimetre from the plate and drivers are not allowed to emboss the letters or use a pasted paper version of the registration plate.

Meanwhile, the registration plates of commercial vehicles must be in black letters on a yellow board and the registration plates of vehicles used in consular missions must be written on a blue board in white letters. All remaining vehicles must have their registration plates in white letters on a black background.

MPS revealed over 1,400 individuals have been advised to amend the registration plates although no fines were imposed so far.
